If you venture across the Mackinac Bridge into the upper peninsula, be sure to stop and check out Straits State Park.
There are two amazing designated bridge views as well as a stretch of shoreline where you can see the bridge, Mackinac Island, Mackinaw City, and freighters passing through the straits.
While a majority of the park is for camping, there is a designated parking and day use area. This is the location of one of the epic bridge views at the top of a long stairway. Head down the stairway and turn right to make the 1/2 mile trek to the second awesome vista. I really like this bridge view because it is perfectly aligned with the pillars for a unique vantage.
While the trail length is fairly short, it does have some moderate climbs in addition to the stairway. Add some distance to your hike by traversing the beach at the waterfront. Of course please be considerate to campers by not cutting through their campsite. This park is also a great choice for cross country skiing and snow shoeing.
You can get to the park off of US-2 just east of I-75. Head south on Church Street. When you arrive at the park, turn left just past the gate booth. You may need to give the attendant a wave or let them know your plan. As a state park, a recreation passport is required for entry.
If you want a short-cut way onto the trails, park at the Michigan Welcome Center just past the bridge toll booth. From there you can pick up the North Country Trail that runs through the park.
