While you might think Mackinaw City has not much to offer for runners, you may be surprised by the possibilities. Several of my favorite runs are in and within the vicinity of Mackinaw City.
Running along Central Ave, the main street west out of downtown, toward Headlands Dark Sky Park is generally quiet and peaceful, especially in the off season. By starting on the west side of I-75, you can cover about 6 miles out to Headlands International Dark Sky Park and back. You can also add some distance with a pass by McGulpin Point and the lighthouse.
A benefit to running Central Ave is that it has a wide shoulder, is lightly used, and is well maintained by plow in the winter.
Zig-zagging the neighborhoods is a great way to take in the charm of the city and up north living. There are some very uniquely styled homes and cottages.
In the right conditions, there are several off-road running options such as May Woods, Headlands, and French Farm Lake.
Views of the Mackinac bridge never get old. If you plan your run right, you can hit at least 6 unique locations for viewing the bridge.
Don’t forget that the old stand-by NCST (North Central State Trail) and NWST (North Western State Trail). Those are good choices if you’re looking to do a long distance run.
